Sailor of SS Meredith Victory Burley Smith Visits Korea | |
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Pi Woo-jin) said that Burely Smith, who made a significant contribution during the Hungnam Evacuation, will visit Busan and Geoje Island in April 5 and 6. The Hungnam Evacuation was the culmination of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in which the embattle UN troops retreated to Hungnam after being overwhelmed by a Chinese counter offensive. The evacuation included 14,000 refugees who were transported on one ship, the SS Meredith Victory. Mr Smith wrote a letter to President Moon before his visit to Korea and President Moon expressed his regrets for not being able to meet Mr Smith in person. However, the President ordered the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to sincerely welcome the family of Mr Smith on behalf of himself. A memorial service will be held on April 6 at a monument to the Hungnam Evacuation at the Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp to honor Leonard LaRue, the captain of the SS Meredith Victory and the sailors who carried out the operation with him. |
