Meritorious Service Record
In 1912, Chen Guofu participated in the New Asia Tongji Society (新亞同濟社), an organization founded in Shanghai by Shin Gyu-sik (申圭植) that fostered cooperation between Korean and Chinese revolutionaries.
After 1919, as a senior leader in the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), he provided financial support to the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and assisted in protecting key independence activists. In 1932, after Yun Bong-gil’s (尹奉吉) heroic act, he arranged a meeting between Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) and Kim Gu (金九). Additionally, he played a key role in the establishment of a special Korean class at the Central Military Academy in Nanjing, ensuring Korean independence fighters could receive military training.
Following Yun Bong-gil’s actions, Japanese authorities launched an extensive manhunt for Kim Gu. Chen Guofu, along with fellow Nationalist officials Chen Lifu (陳立夫), Wu Tiecheng (吳鐵城), and Zhu Qinglan (朱慶瀾), personally facilitated Kim Gu’s escape. After the meeting between Chiang Kai-shek and Kim Gu, the Nationalist Government provided Kim Gu with a monthly stipend of 5,000 won.
In 1940, Chen Guofu played a crucial role in enabling the Provisional Government in Chongqing to establish the Korean Liberation Army (KLA). In 1942, he was named an honorary director of the Sino-Korean Cultural Association (韓中文化協會) alongside Syngman Rhee (李承晩). Until Korea’s liberation in 1945, he continued to provide financial support to the Provisional Government.
The South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Republic of Korea Medal) in 1966.
