Meritorious Service Record

As a key figure in the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (中國革命同盟會), Chen Qimei was actively involved in the New Asia Tongji Society (新亞同濟社), one of the largest organizations in the early 1910s that facilitated direct and indirect Chinese support for Korea’s independence movement. This organization played a crucial role in fostering ties between Chinese and Korean revolutionaries, ultimately contributing to the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in April 1919.
His nephew, Chen Guofu (陳果夫), later recalled Chen Qimei’s dedication to the Korean independence cause, stating:
"My uncle founded the secret organization ‘New Asia Tongji Society’ in Shanghai to promote Korea’s independence by collaborating with Korean revolutionaries."
Additionally, Chen Guofu noted:
"My uncle strongly sympathized with and supported oppressed nations. In late 1912, when he planned to conduct an overseas inspection of commerce and industry, Yuan Shikai (袁世凱) sent 40,000 yuan to Shanghai as travel funds. However, he used most of the money to support his comrades, and one-fifth -around 8,000 yuan- was specifically allocated to Korean, Vietnamese, and Indian revolutionaries, as well as for the tuition fees of Korean students studying in China."
Korean independence activist Min Pil-ho (閔弼鎬) also emphasized that the New Asia Tongji Society served as a central organization linking Chinese and Korean revolutionaries, with Chen Qimei playing a leading role.
On May 18, 1916, while continuing his support for the anti-Japanese resistance, Chen Qimei was assassinated by an unknown assailant in Shanghai.
The South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Republic of Korea Medal) in 1968.
