Following Yun Bong-gil’s (尹奉吉) heroic act in 1932, Chinese official Chen Guofu (陳果夫) ordered Xiao Zheng (蕭錚) to relocate Kim Gu (金九) to Jiaxing (嘉興) for his safety. Chu Bu-cheng, a Jiaxing native and chairman of the Northeast Volunteer Army Support Association (東北義勇軍後援會), took on the task of assisting Kim Gu.
Kim Gu later recalled Chu Bu-cheng’s efforts, stating:
"Mr. Chu designated a beautifully built pavilion by the lake at his foster son’s home as my sleeping quarters… There were several Japanese spies among those who took bribes to track our movements. Given the increasing danger, I realized that staying in Jiaxing any longer would be unsafe and decided to leave."
With Chu Bu-cheng’s assistance, Kim Gu escaped to Haiyan (海盐), the home of Chu’s daughter-in-law, Zhu Jiarui (朱佳蘂), successfully evading Japanese authorities.
Kim Gu deeply appreciated Chu Bu-cheng’s kindness and later wrote:
"When our country gains independence, who among our descendants and compatriots will not revere and admire Madam Zhu Jiarui for her bravery and kindness? Though I could not capture this moment in film, I record it in writing so that future generations may remember."
By sheltering key members of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea at a critical moment, Chu Bu-cheng played a vital role in ensuring the continued survival of the Korean independence movement.
The South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Independence Medal) in 1996.
