Meritorious Service Record
James Henry Roberts Cromwell was a diplomat who served as the United States Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary, and also a political figure who ran as a candidate for the U.S. Senate from New Jersey. In 1942, he supported the Korean independence movement as president of the Korean-American Council.
On March 1, 1942, he spoke at the Korean Liberty Conference held in Washington D.C., urging recognition of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and advocating armed support.
In May of the same year, as President of the Korean-American Council, he sent letters dated June 4 to U.S. Secretary of State Hull, requesting recognition of the Provisional Government and support for the Korean independence movement.
On June 30 of the same year, he met with Secretary Hull and exchanged views on recognizing the Provisional Government and supporting the Korean independence movement.
In March 1943, he published a letter in the New York Post calling for recognition of the Provisional Government.
In April of the same year, he made a similar appeal for recognition and support of the Provisional Government through the Mutual Broadcasting System (MBS) radio network.
In recognition of his contributions, the Korean government awarded him the National Foundation Medal in 2015.
