Meritorious Service Record

In early February 1939, the Korean Youth Frontline Task Force (韓國光復陣線靑年工作隊) was established in Liuzhou under the leadership of Gao Yunqi (高雲起). This organization brought together young members from the Korean National Party (韓國國民黨), the Korean Independence Party (韓國獨立黨), and the Korean Revolutionary Party (朝鮮革命黨)-three major right-wing factions that had united under the Korean Liberation Front (光復陣線). With the involvement of the families of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, the unit quickly grew to approximately 70 members.
The task force actively engaged in anti-Japanese propaganda performances, including fundraising events for wounded Chinese soldiers, commemorations of the March 1st Movement, and joint Korean-Chinese performances. These activities not only demonstrated the organizational capacity of the Provisional Government but also emphasized the necessity and legitimacy of Sino-Korean solidarity.
The task force’s performance-based resistance efforts later evolved into the Korean Youth Battlefield Service Corps (韓國靑年戰地工作隊), which was officially formed in Chongqing on November 11, 1939. Since many of the initial task force members played a key role in establishing the battlefield service corps, the latter can be considered a direct successor. Furthermore, most of these members later joined the Korean Liberation Army (KLA), serving as the foundation of its personnel. Thus, the activities of the Korean Youth Frontline Task Force were instrumental in establishing the KLA’s human resource base, and its members were among the first to lay the groundwork for Korea’s armed independence forces.
He Shangqi, a Chinese national, joined the Korean National Party and worked closely with key figures of the Provisional Government. She moved between Liuzhou, Qijiang (綦江), and Chongqing, actively participating in both the Korean Youth Frontline Task Force and the Battlefield Service Corps.
The South Korean government posthumously awarded her the National Foundatio Medal in 2020.
