Meritorious Service Record

Louis Marin, a member of the French National Assembly, supported the Korean independence movement by establishing the Korean Friends Association (Les Amis de la Coree) in Paris in June 1921.
Marin studied law and political science in Paris before entering politics. In October 1905, he was elected to the French National Assembly as a representative of Meurthe-et-Moselle, a position he held until 1951.
He became actively involved in supporting Korea’s independence after attending a banquet hosted by the Korean Provisional Government’s Communication Office in Paris on August 6, 1919, during the Paris Peace Conference.
On June 23, 1921, he formally established the Korean Friends Association in Paris and served as its president. In his founding speech, Marin condemned Japan’s forcible annexation of Korea, stating that Japan had ignored international law and that Koreans continued to resist Japanese rule. He urged members to launch an active public awareness campaign in France to secure widespread support for the Korean cause.
In 2015, the South Korean government posthumously awarded Louis Marin the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Patriotic Medal) in recognition of his contributions to Korea’s independence.
