Meritorious Service Record

On March 1, 1942, at the Korean Independence Declaration Commemoration Ceremony held in Washington, D.C., Maurice William delivered a speech in support of Korea’s independence. In his speech, he stated:
"I believe that today might be the day when Japan, Italy, and Germany collapse, and the oppressed nations reclaim their freedom. The freedom I speak of is the freedom of all nations... The world has committed an injustice against Korea. When we study international affairs in the 20th century, Korea stands out as a clear example. The world has wronged Korea greatly and must ask for forgiveness."
At the time, William was an active member of the National Committee of the Korea-America Association, advocating for Korea’s independence.
He also organized "Korea Day" in New York, securing $300 in promotional funds from the United Korean Committee in America (UKC) through mediation by Dr. Syngman Rhee, Chairman of the Korean Diplomatic Commission in the U.S. The event took place on May 27, 1942.
On July 19, at a welcome reception hosted by the Los Angeles chapter of the United Korean Committee, he emphasized the importance of promoting Korea’s independence cause in the U.S.
On August 9, at a ceremony in San Francisco honoring the statue of Sun Yat-sen (孫文), he reaffirmed his support for Korea’s independence, stating:
"I am delighted to have met so many Korean friends during this visit. Korea is one of the 28 Allied nations. The independence sought by Koreans is the same goal that we all strive for. We stand on the same front line for this common cause. Anyone who does not unite for this purpose and opposes it should be considered a traitor."
In 1950, the South Korean government awarded Maurice William the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Independence Medal) in recognition of his contributions to Korea’s independence.
