A ceremony is to be held to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Yun Bong-gil’s bombing in Shanghai at 10:00 AM of April 29(Tue) at Lusin Park, Shanghai, China by the Association for Memorial Services of Patriot Yun Bong-gil. His heroic act marked a milestone in the independence movement of Korea during the Japanese colonial period.

Yun Bong-gil (1908. 6.21~1932.12.19) was born in Yesan, Korea. He attended Deoksan Elemantary School and also studied in Ochi Seosuk (a village school that taught Korean and Chinese). In 1926, he opened an evening class in his hometown and began the enlightenment movement for rural communities. At the age of 20, he organized the Kakgok Reading Club and published Nongmin Dokbon (an agrarian reader).
At the age of 22, he organized the Woljinhoe and Suam Athletic Association to further implement the national movement for independence in rural communities. Yun Bong-gil realized the difficulty in continuing independence movement within Korea. He went to Shanghai, where the Korean Provisional Government was located. There he joined the Korean Patriotic Association led by Kim Koo and volunteered to undertake special missions. On occasion of the celebration of the birthday of the Emperor Japan, Yun went to the place of the celebration at Hongkew Park alone and successfully threw a bomb which injured many Japanese military leaders including the commander-in-chief Shiragawa. Yun was arrested on the spot by the Japanese military police and was sentenced to death by a single military trial on May 25. After being transferred to Japan in November, he was shot to death on December 19 of the year, when he was 25. Yun Bol-gil`s heroic struggle against Japan has great significance in the history of the independence movement of Korea.

Yun`s heroic deed provided a catalyst to resuscitate and revitalize the inactive Korean Provisional Government. The Nationalist People`s Party of China, Chinese officials, and overseas Koreans realized the importance of the Korean Provisional Government. His successful heroic deed inspired not only the Korean people but also the Chinese people and served as a momentum of creating and strengthening the coalition between Korean and China in their struggle against Japan.

In order to honor his contribution to the country, the Korean government posthumously conferred on him the Republic of Korea Medal in the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962.
