| 토머스 슈워츠 사령관님! 그리고 주한미군 장병여러분! 어느덧 1999년이 저물어가고 있습니다. 사랑하는 가족과 떨어져 이역만리 한국에서 성탄절과 세모를 맞는 여러분에게 진심으로 위로와 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.(통역) General Thomas Schwartz, All the servicemembers of the United States Forces Korea! The year 1999 is coming to an end so soon. I would like to extend sincere appreciation and recognition to all of you about your service even in christmas and holiday season, staying here in Korea separated from family. 우리 국민 모두는 세계 유일의 분단국가인 이 곳 한국에서 자유와 평화를 수호하기 위해 헌신하고 있는 슈워츠 사령관님이하 전 장병의 노고를 잊지 않고 있으며, 항상 고맙게 생각하고 있습니다.(통역) All the Korean people always remember, and would like to give you, General Schwartz and all the servicemembers, warm applause for your devotions for the freedom and peace in Korea, the only divided country in the world. 한미양국은 1950년 공산주의자의 불법침략에 맞서 자유민주주의를 지켜내면서 혈맹이 된 이후, 지금까지 번영의 동반자로서 긴밀한 유대관계를 유지하고 있습니다.(통역) Since Korea and the US became blood tied alliances through the fighting against outrageous aggression by communists in 1950, we have developed a close cooperation as the partners of mutual prosperity. 남북한의 대규모 군사력이 대치하고 있는 이 곳 한반도에서, 전쟁억제 임무를 완벽하게 수행하여 긴장완화는 물론 평화수호의 일익을 담당하고 있는 주한미군은 매우 소중한 존재입니다.(통역) In Korean peninsular, where massive military forces of south and north are opposing against each other, I believe, the United States Forces Korea is taking a highly important role to ease tensions and to protect peace. 특히 슈워츠 사령관께서는 두 번에 걸쳐 한국에서 근무를 한 적이 있다고 알고 있습니다. 이처럼 한국사정에 정통한 사령관께서 이 땅의 평화를 위해 헌신하고 계신 것을 기쁘고 든든하게 생각하며, 이에 깊은 사의를 표하는 바입니다.(통역) Especially, I heard General Schwartz has served twice here in Korea. The presence of well-informed Commander-in-chief here, and his service for the peace of this country make us feel even more comfortable and secure. On that sense, I would like to extend my special respect once more. 또한 장병여러분들의 노력과 땀은 우리 정부가 견지하는 대북포용정책의 든든한 버팀목으로서 한반도 평화정착에 크게 기여하고 있습니다.(통역) Especially, I believe that your efforts and service are contributing to Korean Government"s Enhancement Policy to the North, as a strong support, in settling peace in Korea 우리 국민 모두는 여러분에 대해서 따뜻한 마음과 애정을 가지고 있으며, 연말을 맞아 여러분의 헌신과 노력에 보답하기 위해서 작은 선물을 준비하였습니다. 기쁜 마음으로 받아주시면 감사하겠습니다.(통역) To express our appreciation to your devotions and sacrifices, we prepared small gifts, which have Korean people"s warm heart and sincerity on it. I hope you would accept it with pleasure. 끝으로, 한국에서의 군복무가 세계 평화에 기여하고, 우리나라를 이해하는 소중한 경험이 되기를 바라며, 성탄절과 새해를 맞아 장병 여러분과 가정에 하느님의 축복이 함께 하시기를 기원합니다.(통역) Finally, I expect your service in Korea become a precious opportunity for all of you to contribute to the world peace, and to understand Korea and Korean people even better.
