First of all I would like to extend my wholehearted thanks to all of you who came across the ocean to preserve peace and freedom in the Republic of Korea. 사랑하는 가족과 떨어져 낯선 곳에서, 어려운 복무 여건에도 불구하고 맡은 임무를 다하고 계시는 여러분의 밝은 모습에 감사를 드립니다. It is my great pleasure to join the outstanding service members of USFK who carry out their mission here in Korea, despite the difficulties of serving in a strange land, apart from your loved families. 여러분의 선배들은 55년 전, 북한이 우리 대한민국을 무력으로 공산화하고, 세계로 확산해 나가려는 기도를 단호히 물리쳤습니다. 막대한 희생을 치르면서도 자유세계가 공유해 온 가치와 신념을 끝내 지켜냈습니다. Fifty-five years ago, one generation of US veterans struggled against the communists' evil ambition to control over the Korean peninsula and then the whole world. Even giving their lives, they finally kept the faith in the value of freedom that the world had been sharing. 그 후 주한미군은, 50여 년간 한반도의 평화와 동북아의 안정을 유지하는 막중한 사명을 지켜왔습니다. Afterward, over the course of the past 50 years, other generations of US forces have successfully managed to keep peace in Korea and stability in Northeast Asia. 대한민국은 전쟁의 폐허를 딛고 일어서서, 세계가 놀라는 경제발전과 민주화를 이룩하고, 세계의 평화와 번영에 기여하는 나라가 되었습니다. From ground zero, Korea has made a remarkable economic growth, blossomed democracy, and has become one of the contributors to world peace and prosperity. 우리나라가 지금과 같은 안보의 반석 위에 번영을 누릴 수 있는 것은, 6·25전쟁에 참전하시어 헌신하거나 희생하신 분들이 있었기에 가능했다고 생각합니다. I think all the progress Korea has made was possible because of the Korean War veterans. Without their sacrifices and commitment, we would have no security and prosperity. 우리 국민들은 6·25전쟁 당시 미국이 보여 주었던 자유수호 의지와 유엔군 참전용사들의 고귀한 희생을 잊지 않고 있으며, 한반도의 평화를 보장하기 위한 주한미군 여러분의 노고에 대하여 항상 고맙게 생각하고 있습니다. In this regard, Korean people always remember the dedication of US veterans who preserved the protected freedom during the Korean War. We always keep in mind the noble sacrifices of the UN forces in the Korean territory. And we Koreans always honor the contributions of US service men and women stationed in Korea to secure peace on the Korean peninsula. 자리를 함께 해 주신 모범장병 여러분! 지금도 평화는 우리에게 가장 절실한 소망입니다. 그러나 평화는 그것을 지킬 힘이 있을 때에만 얻어지는 것입니다. Distinguished service members of USFK; peace is the essence of our desire, and it is secured only if we have the strength to keep it. 한반도에 평화가 완전하게 정착되기 위해서는, 튼튼한 안보가 뒷받침 되어야 하는 데, 이를 위해서 먼저 우리 스스로를 지켜나갈 수 있는 능력을 키워나가는 데 혼신의 힘을 쏟아야 할 것입니다. To secure a sustainable and stable peace on the Korean peninsula, strong national security is smart insurance. To that end, Korea will exert its best effort to improve the Korean forces ability in self-defense. 또한, 지금까지의 공고한 한미동맹 관계를 바탕으로 앞으로 더욱 굳건하고 미래지향적인 한·미간의 긴밀한 협력이 유지되기를 바라 마지않습니다. Also, we will always try hard to maintain future oriented cooperation with the US, based on our long-lasting allied relationship. 여러분께서는 앞으로도 50여 년간 쌓아 온 신뢰와 우정을 바탕으로, 양국 간의 유대 관계를 더욱 발전시키는 데 노력해 주시길 바랍니다. I would like to ask your cooperation in promoting this enduring relationship between our two countries that has been built upon trust and friendship for the last 50 years. 아울러 지난 6월에 주한미군 좋은 이웃 웹사이트’개설 2주년을 맞은 것을 뒤늦게나마 축하드립니다.
