A Puerto Rican Veteran Comes Back To the Land He Fought For

16 Puerto Rican Korean War veterans from 65th Infantry Regiment and US veterans who fought in the Korean War including Dick Throm who fought in the Battle of Jangjin Lake will visit the Republic of Korea from September 18 to 23.


Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea. It is five times larger than Jeju Island and approximately 3.7 million people are residing in the island. The Puerto Rican unit that fought in the Korean War was the 65th Infantry Regiment, consisting of only Puerto Ricans.


Ismael Nevarez, who will visit Korea through the event, served in the 65th Infantry Regiment with his brother and was awarded with the Bronze Star Medal for his bravery in the Korean War. Ismael Nevarez served in the US military for 21 years after the war. Dick Throm, a US Korean War veteran, fought in the Battle of Jangjin Lake as private 1st class. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the Korean government which invited him to the land he once sacrificed his life for.


The itinerary of the event is as follows.
September 19: introduction on the projects of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, cultural activities, visit to Seoul National Cemetery
September 20: visit to Panmunjeom and Insadong tour
September 21: tribute in War Memorial, visit to Korean Folk Village
September 22: visit to Changdeokgung Palace, Thank You Banquet hosted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs
