Turn Toward Busan International Memorial Ceremony in Honor of the Fallen Korean War Heroes

‘The World Turns Toward Busan for One Minute at 11:00am

on November 11, 2019’

Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Park Sam-Duck) said the Turn Toward Busan International Memorial Ceremony will be held at 11:00am on November 11, 2019 at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea in Busan, under the theme of “Moment to Be One, Turn Toward Busan.”

The international memorial ceremony is organized in honor of the UN Korean War veterans who made sacrifices for the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War. Approximately 1,000 people including Korean War veterans and family members from home and abroad, and diplomatic missions to Korea are expected to attend the ceremony. The order of the ceremony includes one-minute of silence, march of the flags, wreath-laying, remarks, tribute performance, and choir performance.

Prior to the ceremony, Minister Park Sam-Duck of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will visit the graves of and pay respects to James Patrick Daunt, the youngest UN soldier killed in action during the Korean War, Kenneth Wellington Norton, whose bereaved family will be visiting Korea, and British Korean War veteran Paul Joseph Keating. The three fallen Korean War heroes will be posthumously awarded with the Ambassador for Peace Medal for their noble sacrifice.

  • James Patrick Daunt, Australia: the youngest UN soldier killed in action at the age of 17 on November 6, 1951

  • Kenneth Wellington Norton, Canada: killed in action on November 5, 1951 (his brother Mildred Timbers has visited Korea)

  • Paul Joseph Keating, UK: killed in action on June 12, 1951 (his son William Keating has visited Korea)

When the siren goes off across Busan at 11:00am sharp, all attendees will pay respects to the UN Korean War veterans who were killed in action with one-minute of silence and 19 gun salutes will be fired in honor of their sacrifice and contribution.
