MPVA Holds Appreciation Events in Luxembourg and the Netherlands

Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Park Sam-Duck) said that a delegation including Minister Park will visit Luxembourg and the Netherlands from October 22 to 27, 2019.

Luxembourg and the Netherlands will the first UN sending states that Minister Park visits after his appointment as the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. The objective of the visit is to express the Korean government’s appreciation for the sacrifice and contribution of the Korean War veterans from both nations.

 

On October 23, 2019, Minister Park will visit Luxembourg to meet Korean War veterans in person, pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg, and attend the Korean War Commemorative Ceremony.

  • One of the Korean War veterans that Minister Park will meet is Mr. Joseph Wagner, who was the only Luxembourgish officer that participated in the Korean War. Mr. Wagner participated in the Korean War from October 1950 to October 1951 and fought in the battle of Geungul Mountain. He is admitted to a hospital due to his recent injury.

 

Following this, Minister Park will host luncheon for Mr. Michel Clemont, Luxembourgish Korean War veteran, Ms. Cathy Thill and Ms. Anny Pissinger, spouses of deceased veterans, and Ms. Yasmine Beringer and Ms. Denise Buchholtz, daughters of deceased veterans.

  • Ms, Buchholtz participated in the July Revisit Korea Program this year, whereas Ms. Yasmine Beringer will take part in the November Revisit Korea Program.

 

After the luncheon, Minister Park will pay his visit to Mr. Gilbert Hauffels. He participated in the Korean War from May 1952 to January 1953.

 

After visiting the Korean War veteran, Minister Park will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg to express the Korean government’s appreciation for Luxembourg’s participation in the war and discuss ways in which the two countries can cooperate on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War.

  • Prime Minister Xavier Bettel met Prime Minister Lee Nak-yun of the Republic of Korea in July 2018 and March 2019.

 

On October 24, 2019, Korean War Commemorative Ceremony organized by the Luxembourg Korean War Veterans Association will be held at 11:00am at the Constitution Square. The order of the ceremony includes wreath-laying, national anthem, moment of silence, and roll call of veterans killed in action. After the ceremony, the attendees will enjoy the appreciation luncheon at a nearby hotel.

On October 25, 2019, Minister Park will visit the Van Heutsz Regiment in the Netherlands and take a tour of the Korean War section at the war museum. Minister Park will also deliver an appreciation plaque to a representative of the Van Heutsz Regiment.

 

After the visit to Van Heutsz Regiment, Minister Park will visit the Inspector General Hans van Griensven of the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands to express the Korean government’s appreciation for the Netherland’s participation in the war and
