Late Albert Hugh McBride Rests in Peace in the Land He Fought for


- The repatriation and interment ceremony of a Canadian veteran of the Korean War, late Mr. Albert Hugh McBride, will be held on June 11, 2019, at the Incheon International Airport and on June 12, 2019, at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) respectively.
- 3 deceased UN veterans of the Korean War have been interred this year in the UNMCK and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs focuses its effort to maintain a strong friendship with the UN sending states.
- The widow, the lifelong partner of the deceased veteran, and his grandson will visit Korea together and visit the War Memorial of Korea and the battlefield in which the deceased veteran fought.


The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Pi Woo-jin) said "the repatriation and interment ceremony of a Canadian veteran of the Korean War, late Mr. Albert Hugh McBride, will be held on June 11 at the Incheon International Airport and on June 12, 2019, at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) respectively."


Mrs. Isabelle McBride and Mr. Brandon McBride, the widow and the grandson of the late Mr. Albert Hugh McBride, will arrive at the Incheon International Airport with the remains of the deceased veteran at 1:50 p.m. on June 11, 2019. The repatriation ceremony will begin at 2:50 p.m.


Mrs. Isabelle McBride married Mr. Albert Hugh McBride in January, 1954 and has one daughter and one son. She requested the repatriation and interment of the remains of her late husband in 2018, a year after he passed away.


The repatriation ceremony will be hosted by Minister Pi Woo-jin of Patriots and Veterans Affairs at the Arrival Hall of Incheon International Airport and the Canadian Ambassador to Korea, Mr. Michael Danagher and other embassy staff will attend the ceremony. The honor guard will be present at the repatriation ceremony as well to greet the fallen hero with the highest level of courtesy.


After the repatriation ceremony, the remains of the deceased veteran will lie in state temporarily in the Seoul National Cemetery and be interred in the UNMCK at 1:30 p.m. on June 12, 2019. The interment ceremony will be hosted by the Canadian Embassy to Korea and attended by approximately 50 people including the Vice Minister Lee Byoung Goo of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Canadian Ambassador to Korea, Mr. Michael Danagher, Korean War veterans, and students.


Late Mr. Albert Hugh McBride is the 9th UN veteran of the Korean War to be interred in the UNMCK.

As a young soldier, the deceased veteran participated in the Korean War in November, 1951 and stayed in Korea until January, 1953. He was discharged from the army in March, 1953, only a while after he came back from Korea.


He served in the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadian) as a gunner and a tank driver and fought in the Second Battle of the Hook. He was deeply proud of his service in Korea. After he was discharged from the army, we reenlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served there for 22 years. He passed away in March 8, 2017.


The bereaved family members of the late Mr. Albert Hugh McBride will attend the repatriation and interment ceremony after arriving at the Incheon International Airport on June 11, 2019. They will also visit the deceased veteran's battlefield in Yeoncheon and the War Memorial of Korea.


On June 11, 2019, the bereaved family members will arrive at the Incheon International Airport and attend the repatriation ceremony. After the remains of the deceased veteran lies temporarily in state in the Seoul National Cemetery, they will pay tribute in the cemetery.

On June 12, 2019, the bereaved family members will attend the interment ceremony in the UNMCK and take a tour of the United Nations Peace Memorial Hall. In the evening, they will attend the dinner hosted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

On June 13, 2019, the bereaved family members will visit the Sangseung OP and Typhoon OP located in Yeoncheon to pay tribute to the deceased veteran and his comrades.

On June 14, 2019, they will pay tribute in the War Memorial of Korea and take a tour of the Changdeokgung Palace and Insadong to see and experience Korean culture.


An official from the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs said that "in case there are other UN veterans of the Korean War who wish to be interred in the UNMCK, the Korean government will show the highest level of courtesy. The Korean government will continue to maintain and advance the friendship with the UN sending states through the Revisit Korea Program, Youth Peace Camp and local appreciation events."
